Arrived at the Beach Just as My Adventure Ends

So let me get this straight. I get to hang out in a hospital room for 6 days and get to spend a day and a half at the beach. Last time I book with that travel agent.

I am taking advantage of my 36 hours. 5 minutes after arriving I was sipping on Kingfisher, gazing out at the ocean (to answer Dennis). The very place I was sitting had to be rebuilt following last year's tsunami. Neil has posted a comment to the previous posting describing our first 24 hours.

The computer I'm working from is fairly old so I can't post photos now but I will on Sunday when I am back in St. Louis. I watched the sun rise over the Indian Ocean - that will be near the top of the highlight list for me.

The India portion of my adventure is coming to a close. I'll post more later when I have some distance and perhaps some more perspective on the trip. This blog has been a blast and the best discovery was the two-way communication that it facilitated. All of your comments have been appreciated and helped both of us through this adventure. More from me on Sunday as I recover from 'jet lag' and watch the Super Bowl (and no doubt missing Cricket).

Watching my partner head out of the hotel parking lot with only a waving hand visible and an old Mercedes minus a muffler was very hard. I feel teary as I write this. Peter is flying against the clock and will arrive home the same date as he left-the stuff of twilight zone.
I stayed in bed for a long time this morning comtemplating this new situation before I begsn my day. Because of my improved mobility and energy , I am going to see if the resort will release 2 or 3 of my days here so I can go south to Pondicherry. Looks like I would be able to find a manageable situation and get some exploring and site seeing in. We will. I say goodbye to some new friends from Vancover area that were here for a knee replacement. Great stories of lives that include lots of travels. They depart late tonight and we have plans for dinner together before they go.
I should be able to syay in good touch. Thank you for all your support. This is very helpful for me to have some contact each day.

We're with you, Neil. I look forward to reading your post each morning. You let my mind travel from balmy but somewhat dreary southwest Missouri to the Indian Ocean. A real gift. And I'm excited that you feel energetic enough to travel on your own to other places. Keep us posted.

Love,

Ken

Neil,

Sorry that your travels with Pete have come to closure. We'll all miss the different perspectives of India. Yet, with each turn of the page comes a new part of the story. I'm glad that you are feeling much better. So, on to Pondicherry and more adventures. Maria and I were wondering if you would encounter other Westerners on medical sojourns at the resort. The friends that you have met - are they from Vancouver, BC, or Vancouver, Washington? Take care and enjoy in travels.

Neil,

It's been a real joy to wake up and check the blog to see what you've been up to today/yesterday! I'm glad you were able to make connections with someone else who went through a similar experience -I hope dinner went well!

How are you feeling (except alone)? Do you see any signs of the tsunami - do people talk about it at all?

Take care,

Ellen

HI, Neil. I got your email and called Tupper to forward it to him. So glad to hear you are feeling better and have increased mobility and energy. That must feel good. I hope you get to do some traveling before you head back home. Since you won't be back to work for a couple of weeks and I am not sure of my future plans, as of yet, I may wait a week or so before I come down there. I am so looking forward to seeing you and hearing in more detail how your trip was. Heal up! Love Lu

Hi Neil,
Happy to hear that you are feeling more mobile. My prayers and thoughts are with you as you say goodbye to your supportive sibling and move to the next part of your journey. Glad to hear that you are making friends---one of the wonderful things about traveling. It stretches our edges a bit if we allow it to.
Today was a bit of a weary day for Mark and I. He ended up in the emergency room with Kidney stones. Luckily he did not have to stay in the hospital and is feeling better. Home with some meds and able to rest. We are off to Mexico on vacation on February 15th so I guess it is good this happened here and not there. Big hugs to you.

Checking in after missing a day.
I did watch the super bowl as it coincides closely with my normal wake up. Sotty about the outcome. I must say that after Cricket not even American football really builds the excitement and tention of a good 5 or 6 day match.
The weekend was very busy here with lots of people and families that come for Sat. and Sun. Live music at every meal. Sat. night we had a trio that included a key board and ranged from Streisand to Dire Straits and the Police. Apparently, John Denver's "Country Roads" is required of every band on the South India circuit.
Another lovely day here. Clear and sunny.
On my way tosee the manager and begin to explore options for more travel. More later.

Back on the blog for the second time today. Wanted to see if the connection was faster at different times of the day. Took me foreever to go through some of my email the first time around.
Janet; I was required to stay for at least a week after surgery before flying home. I expected to be more recovered and wanted some time to travel South India while I was here. Unfortunately, the doctor increased my restictions; fortunately, I will be better prepared for that grueling flight because of the extended stay.
Dennis & Maria, Outside Vancouver,BC. I have not meet others yet . The majority of the patients go to another resort just a little furter down the coast (15 minutes). This is notable less money and is adaquate . The staff here gets plenty of action over time-but not as densely packed.
Ellen, The Tsunami was notable but not so damaging here. They did have torebuild the dining hall but it does not sound like it was devastating. However, there are long streches of property betweeen the road and the ocean that are completely bare. Peter and I thought it likely that some of this was cleared by the ocean and not by man. We also saw many small, densely packed groupings of grass and tin homes that certainly could be housing that went up because of the destruction of the tsunami. So, the answer is certainly some but I think not huge.
Now I remember why the football was so uninspiring- I did not see any US commercials!! Was carried by ESPN/India and all local commercials.

The commercials are the reason that a lot of people watch the Super Bowl - and now you can download some of them to your Ipod so you can watch again and again. I didn't notice any controversy in the half-time show - did I miss anything? Of course, we were rooting for the Seahawks, so we were disappointed here. I hope the Lattes helped in Seattle.

Neil, did you get released to travel to Pondicherry? Are you feeling some improvement each day or is it varied?

Pete, how's the recovery coming back? Was the jet lag worse or better or the same as traveling to India? Some people say it is worse going one way or the other.
